Denzel Washington has announced a range of new projects, surprising many by revealing he plans to retire after completing his current commitments. The Oscar-winning actor expressed that, at this stage in his career, he’s selective about projects, working only with top filmmakers. Among these final roles, he will appear in the Black Panther franchise, and he’s also scheduled to take on a Broadway production of Othello in February 2025 alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. Washington shared his excitement to revisit Othello, a role he first played at 22, now returning to it at 70.
Washington also hinted at a series of projects with renowned directors, including collaborations with Steve McQueen and Ryan Coogler, as well as potential roles in adaptations of King Lear and a movie about the Carthaginian general Hannibal. “After that, I’m going to retire,” he stated. Washington, who began his career in 1977 and became a Hollywood icon with roles in Glory, Training Day, and Malcolm X, has defined a legacy of intense and impactful performances that will continue to influence the industry long after his final curtain.
